In my next article, I will provide a “gentle” introduction to Energy Transition to argue that a holistic approach is needed to deal with the (often) competing objectives of energy security, energy affordability and energy sustainability. To that end, I will present a series of charts to show:[1] Economic development requires energy usage, which is dominated by fossil fuels and therefore leads to CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions.[2] This contributes to global warming which is related to climatic impacts with costly disruptions to the economy, the mitigation of which requires a new energy, low carbon paradigm. Stay tuned!

Hello Network –This is to let you know of my intention to celebrate six months of full-time retirement from Battelle by planning to write a series of LinkedIn articles under the general heading of “Ramblings on Analytics and Energy Transition”. These occasional articles will feature insights culled from my four decades of research, consulting and teaching experience related to: (a) application of data analytics (statistical modeling, machine learning) for subsurface energy resource management problems, (b) emerging trends and concepts associated with the demonstration and deployment of subsurface oriented decarbonization strategies such as geological carbon storage and hydrogen underground storage, and (c) analysis and modeling of injection/production processes in geo-energy systems.Stay tuned for the first article, to appear in a week or so, on how to adapt practicing petroleum engineering and geoscience skills for the new energy economy.Happy reading! सुखद पठनम्!

Enjoyed collaborating with Prof Vikram Vishal and colleagues for the recent CCUS workshop held at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay's Center of Excellence for Oil, Gas and Energy on February 21-23. My lectures on "Reservoir engineering concepts for CO2 storage in saline aquifers and depleted oil fields" generated many insightful questions and discussion from participants representing various Indian PSUs active in the oil and gas sector. It was a privilege to serve as the Guest of Honor and deliver the plenary talk on "Leveraging Oil & Gas Expertise and Digitalization to Accelerate Energy Transition" at the recently concluded ICOGES-24 conference on February 16-17 2024 organized by Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU). My compliments to the convener Dr Achinta Bera and his team (especially the student volunteers) for putting together a great conference. I also visited some of the facilities at PDEU and was impressed by the broad range of activities being carried out in the Energy space. Onward and upward!
